Roy Ward is a Melbourne based freelance journalist and sports writer who has written for a number of newspapers, websites and magazines since first having his work published as a university student in 2005.
Ward is best known for his basketball and rugby league writing which appear in The Age newspaper and various Fairfax Media publications and websites - he also makes regular appearances on radio stations ABC Grandstand and SEN to talk about Australian basketballers based at home and around the world.
His coverage of the Women’s National Basketball League has won several awards including the WNBL best writer honour for the 2013-2014 season while he also won the Victorian Country Football League’s best feature award in 2008.
A versatile writer, Ward has covered many different sports including AFL, NRL, soccer, cricket, netball, tennis and, of course, basketball.
Having worked for country (Wimmera Mail-Times), suburban (Dandenong Journal) and national daily newspapers (The Age) - Ward provides reliable and insightful copy with an eye to telling the stories of athletes, teams and clubs.
He is equally comfortable interviewing local athletes or NBA superstars and tries to find the most unique way to tell a story.
