On September 21, 2013 unidentified gunmen stormed the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya. The three day siege caused 67 deaths and made headlines worldwide. Freelance photojournalist, Kabir Dhanji, was on his way to the mall to have his cameras serviced when the siege began. When he arrived he saw “absolute chaos and panic” reign. Over the next 24 hours he helped the relief effort and documented the events.
Newsmodo reached out to its journalists on the ground in Nairobi. Kabir was one of them. He had built an image library of more than 200 photos. Equally powerful was his personal story as one of the journalists who spent the longest time at the mall after the siege began. We pitched this story and access to his images to our broad network of publishers.

Kabir’s story was picked up by the Australia’s Herald Sun, along with some of his exclusive images. NBC (US) booked Kabir as a fixer during the siege.
